Tragedy of body found in Thorpe garden

A 'BUBBLY' 25-year-old was found hanged in the garden of the Thorpe home she shared with her boyfriend, an inquest heard yesterday.

The body of Karla Janssen was founding hanging from a tree on January 20 this year by Barry Welch, who owns the property and is the father of her boyfriend Leon.

Woking Coroner's Court heard Ms Janssen had suffered from a hiatus hernia for six months, which made her unwell and spontaneously vomit up anything she swallowed.

The court was also told she was worried about a pending disciplinary hearing at her workplace, Three Valleys Water, where she was a streetworks coordinator.

She had drunk alcohol and taken cocaine on the evening before her death.

Leon Welch, Ms Janssen's boyfriend of nearly four years, was in Austria when his father found her body.

Barry Welch told the court: "I arrived at about 10.30am, opened the gate and drove through, and let their dog out.

"I went down to the garden to feed the chickens and just happened to turn around and see her."

A post-mortem report gave the cause of death as hanging.

A separate toxicology report showed traces of cocaine and revealed 216mg of alcohol in Miss Janssen's system - three times the legal drink/drive limit.

Christine Janssen told the court her daughter had shown no signs of depression, but had been anxious about the disciplinary hearing.

Leon Welch said: "She was bubbly, friendly and happy-go-lucky, she would talk to anyone pretty much. She was just a nice person really."

In a narrative verdict, deputy coroner for Surrey, Dr Karin Englehart, said: "Karla Janssen was clearly an attractive personality, but she had had some recent troubles.

"On the night of her death she had been drinking and had taken cocaine and because of that I am not able to say completely unambiguously and without doubt that she intended to take her own life, so I am recording an open verdict."

We'd like to hear from you.
