Horticultural heroes to be awarded at Egham Royal Show

Green-fingered gardeners will be rewarded for their endeavours when the winners of the 2009 Best Kept Garden competition receive their awards.

The winners of the annual competition, organised by the Egham Residents Association, will be formally presented with their awards at the Egham Royal Show, which takes place on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30 at Caddey's Field, off Whitehall Lane.

The presentation, taking place on the Sunday, will also include a photo display of the winning gardens.

This year's overall winner was Wendy Taylor, of Harpesford Avenue, Virginia Water. The special judges prize went to Maggie Langley of Clarence Street, Egham. The best senior citizen prize was awarded to Eileen Rycroft of Roundway, Egham and the best small space was awarded to Sally and Bernard Dennis of Middle Hill, Englefield Green.

Organiser, Sian Williams, said that the standard this year had been very good and praised sponsors, Egham-based, Dewgard Window Company.

She said: "All the gardens were looking very green and healthy and the standard was exceptionally high this year.

"It has been a very good event, with all the judges giving up their time for free and the only way we can keep holding a community event like this is thanks to the generous sponsorship from local companies - without them there would be no event."

Prize winner, Sally Dennis, said that gardening was therapeutic for her and husband, Bernard, and that they would sometimes be gardening twice a day.

She said: "Well, we are both gardeners and horticultural people and in the past we had a small nursery and grew herbs.

"We keep our front garden really nice because it's nice for people to look at as they go past. Now we are really looking forward to the Royal Show."

We'd like to hear from you.
